Why buy the BMW X1?

If you want a practical but compact family car that feels a bit special, the BMW X1 could be for you. You get the space and practicality you expect of a compact SUV, with a premium-quality interior, user-friendly tech and a great driving experience. Most models don't cost much to run, either.

BMW X1 range and updates

The current version of the X1 has been sold since 2015, when it replaced an older version sold from 2009 to 2015. You can easily tell them apart because the two cars look very different and the current version has more up-to-date technology. It’s also a bit bigger, so there’s more interior space.

There’s a model to suit most needs in the X1 range. You can choose from petrol, diesel or plug-in hybrid power, and manual or automatic gearboxes, and some models have four-wheel drive. There are no high-performance models but every X1 has good acceleration and can zip easily up to motorway speeds.

You can choose from a number of trim levels with the luxurious xLine and sporty-looking M Sport being the most popular.

BMW X1 tech and features

Every version of the current X1 comes very well equipped,  with sat nav, air con, cruise control and parking sensors as standard. You’ll find Apple CarPlay is standard on some X1s, but Android Auto is optional, so Android users should check if the used car you’re interested in has it. The older version is well equipped, but lacks some of the latest model’s more up-to-date tech.

BMW X1 running costs and value

The X1 will give you good fuel economy for this type of car. In the current version, petrol models can get 41-49mpg and diesels give you an average of 55-62mpg, according to official figures. The older version isn’t too far behind. The plug-in hybrid has a zero-emission electric-only range of up to 30 miles per battery charge. Vehicle Excise Duty (car tax) and insurance costs are reasonable.

BMW X1 vs rivals

Other premium compact SUVs include the Audi Q3, Mercedes-Benz GLA and Range Rover Evoque. The X1 isn’t the most comfortable of these, thanks to its firm suspension, but it offers practicality and a sporty driving experience that those rivals can’t quite match.
