Thinking of buying a used BMW X4?
The style of the car
The five-door BMW X4 is essentially a coupe version of the X3 SUV, sharing most parts but adding a sportier sloping roofline and different styling from the front doors backwards. It remains a good family car, however, with lots of interior space and a versatile hatchback boot. M Sport models have a sportier look and feel throughout.
How it drives
The X4 is good to drive. M Sport models have stiff suspension for sharper handling, but overall the X4 is comfortable and quiet. Powerful engines make it a great choice for long journeys, while the high-performance X M40i and X4M models are very quick. A smooth automatic gearbox and standard parking sensors make life easier in town. The four-wheel-drive system adds reassurance in slippery conditions and boosts the X4’s towing abilities.
The interior
The BMW X4 is the same size as the X3 it’s based on but it has a slightly lower roofline. It’s roughly the same size as rivals such as the Lexus NX and Porsche Macan. The five-door, five-seat body makes it a versatile family car. Passengers in the back seats get plenty of legroom, although headroom is a bit limited for tall adults.
The hatchback boot lid has a big opening and you’ll get three medium-sized suitcases plus several soft bags in the 500-litre boot. Even more can be squeezed in once the back seats are folded. Standard equipment for the entry-level SE model includes BMW’s iDrive infotainment system, Bluetooth, sat nav, leather trim and heated seats; xLine trim adds sports seats, while M Sport has metal-finish trim inserts and a sportier steering wheel.
Running costs and reliability
The X4 is competitively priced with premium rivals and matches them for equipment and luxury. The engines are all very efficient, with official average fuel economy of up to 55.4mpg for the diesels. CO2 emissions are comparatively low, so the X4 costs less to tax than some rivals. BMW has a strong reputation for reliability and has scored well in recent customer satisfaction surveys. The X4 features all the latest advanced safety aids and scored a full five stars in Euro NCAP safety tests.
How the BMW X4 compares with similar cars
The X4 is the coupe version of the BMW X3 SUV. It’s smaller than the more expensive BMW X6 but larger than the X2. The X4 is about the same size as the Audi A3 and Range Rover Evoque but has a more sporty look.
What’s the difference between BMW’s SUV models and which one is right for you? Here’s our buyer's guide to the BMW SUV range.
BMW X4 Common Questions
The X4 should be dependable because BMW has a solid reputation for reliability and generally performs well in independent customer satisfaction surveys.
Some versions of the X4 are pricey, but all of its engines are very efficient, with impressively low fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
Despite its tapered roofline the BMW X4 is almost as practical as the X3 it’s based on. It’s a spacious and versatile family car.
The BMW X4 closely matches rivals such as the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe in most areas. It’s particularly good to drive, however, and has a very user-friendly infotainment system.
