While most BMW convertibles have a soft fabric roof, some have a hardtop made from metal and plastic. The 3 Series Convertible was the first BMW to have such a hard-top roof back in 2006, followed by the Z4 in 2009 and 4 Series Convertible in 2013. Hard-top convertibles were very popular for a while because they’re as quiet and secure as a coupe. However, fabric roofs are now just as good in those regards, plus they’re lighter and take up less space when folded. The current generations of the Z4 (sold new since 2020) and the 4 Series Convertible (sold new since 2021) have fabric roofs.

BMW Convertible buying guide
There’s a more diverse range of used BMW convertible cars available than you’ll find from just about any other brand. Whether you want two or four seats, a small car or a large car, a hard top or a soft top, low running costs or massive power, there’s probably a BMW convertible that fits the bill. Whichever one you choose, you’ll get a car that looks good, feels great to drive and is packed with tech.
What are the most popular BMW convertible cars?
BMW 2 Series Convertible– The 2 Series is BMW’s smallest four-seat convertible. It has space for four adults and the boot is a good size, with space for a couple’s week-long-holiday luggage. You can choose from a wide range of engines including fuel-efficient diesels and high-performance versions.
BMW 4 Series Convertible– The 4 Series sits in the middle of BMW’s four-seat convertible range, between the smaller 2 Series and the bigger 6 and 8 Series. That arguably puts it in a sweet spot – it’s more practical than the smaller car and a more convenient size than the bigger cars. Choose from petrol or diesel engines, two- or four-wheel drive and a wide range of trim levels.
BMW Z4 Roadster – The Z4 is a classic sports car with a long bonnet and the two seats positioned almost between the rear wheels. It looks great and is enjoyable to drive – fun on a country road and just as quiet and comfortable as any BMW saloon on the motorway. It even has quite a big boot for this type of car.
Common questions about BMW convertibles
There are four different four-seat BMW convertibles that have been sold in recent years. In size order, these are the 2 Series sold new from 2014 to 2021, the 4 Series sold from 2013, the 6 Series sold from 2011 to 2018 and the 8 Series, which replaced the 6 Series in 2019. Older models include the 3 Series Convertible that was replaced by the 4 Series Convertible, and an earlier 6 Series sold from 2003.
There are two different two-seat BMW convertibles – the Z4 and i8. The Z4 is a traditional sports car with the engine at the front under a long bonnet and with a short back end. It’s a classic, rather elegant look. The i8 is something else entirely. With its futuristic styling, it looks unlike any other car on the road. It’s a plug-in hybrid with an official zero-emissions range of up to 33 miles that’s also very fast and a lot of fun to drive.
The fastest BMW convertible you can buy (as of May 2022) – indeed, the fastest there has ever been – is the M8 Competition convertible. Under its bonnet is a 4.4-litre engine with two turbos that help generate a whopping 616bhp. That’s enough for the M8 to get from 0-62mph in just 3.3 seconds, which makes this large, luxurious convertible as fast as some much more specialised sports cars.
