Used Volkswagen 4x4s

The terms ‘4x4’ and ‘SUV’ are interchangeable. They refer to a type of car that rides high off the ground and can – in theory at least – be driven over rough, off-road terrain. SUV has been the preferred term for such cars for many years. Although 4x4 also means four-wheel drive, not all Volkswagen SUVs are actually available with four-wheel drive and some of its ‘regular’ cars (such as the Passat) are.

Volkswagen produces a wide range of SUV-style cars. Some high-spec models of the compact T-Roc and mid-size Tiguan, and all models of the large Touareg have four-wheel drive. The small T-Cross SUV only has front-wheel drive. VW marks its four-wheel drive cars with a 4MOTION badge on the back.

There’s a Volkswagen 4x4 to suit most needs and budgets. The luxurious Touareg is very capable when driving off-road, as well. For most people, the main benefit of a 4x4 is that they feel more secure in wet, muddy or icy conditions than a front or rear-wheel drive car. They’re a lot better for towing too.

Volkswagen is a very desirable brand and its cars have a high-quality feel and hold their value well, which helps to offset their slightly higher price, compared to similar cars from other brands. All the engines available give good economy, particularly the diesels, and VWs are very reliable, so running costs should be low.
