The engine options for the BMW 5 Series M Sport trim vary, so the power output of the specific car you're considering depends on its engine. Choices in the current generation (sold new from 2017) range from the efficient (but still powerful) four-cylinder engines, giving at least 181bhp, to the more powerful six-cylinder engines that have up to 335bhp. There’s also a plug-in hybrid option with 248bhp.

Thinking of getting a BMW 5 Series M Sport?
What is the BMW 5 Series M Sport?
The BMW 5 Series M Sport is a well-equipped, high-end version of BMW’s large saloon and estate model. This very popular trim offers a sportier edge than most other 5 Series models. The M Sport trim includes distinctive styling elements, so you get some of the visual appeal of BMW’s high-performance M models at a more affordable price and with a choice of more efficient engines.
What is the BMW 5 Series?
The BMW 5 Series is a popular large premium car available as a saloon or as an estate called the 5 Series Touring. It’s renowned the world over for its blend of luxury, performance and cutting-edge technology. Rivals include the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and the Audi A6. The 5 Series generally sets itself apart by being more fun to drive than its German rivals. An all-new 5 Series went on sale in late 2023, replacing the version sold new since 2017.
Where does the BMW 5 Series M Sport fit in the range?
The M Sport trim sits at the top of the regular 5 Series range, but below the performance-focused M550i and M5. Below the M Sport are the SE and Sport trims. Versions of the M Sport trim, such as the M Sport Premium and M Sport Pro, generally add extra equipment as standard.
How is the BMW 5 Series M Sport different from the rest of the 5 Series range?
The SE and Sport trims, which sit below the M Sport model in the 5 Series range, don’t have the sportier styling elements that you’ll find on the M Sport. Nor do they have the M Sport suspension, which is set lower to improve the car’s cornering ability. M Sport cars also get more supportive front seats and larger alloy wheels.
BMW 5 Series M Sport FAQs
M Sport is a very popular trim level for BMW and has been a staple of most of its cars for many years. It’s very rare for a BMW car to not feature an M Sport trim in its range, although the i3 electric hatchback, which was focused more on efficiency than sportiness, didn’t offer one.
